Green bags to collect old newspapers in Dubai

BY PMA RASHEED
The Gulf Today, 3 Feb 2010

Each household or office that is subscribed to newspapers in Dubai will be provided with green bags to fill their old papers that will be collected once a fortnight.
The new environmentally-friendly scheme titled "Green Paper" project has been launched on Tuesday in Dubai by Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Leadership Development (MBRCLD).
Under the scheme, the newspaper subscribers will be financially benefited with shopping vouchers and entertainment tickets and gift hampers, in order to encourage them to be part of the environment conservation programme.
Adel Al Shared, Executive Chairman of MBRCLD, said the subscribers will get a certain number of discount coupons and other merchandise offerings depending on the quantity of old newspapers in the green bag.
"The comprehensive recycling programme will complement annual investments of over $415 million in the UAE's paper industry. The pioneering project of the newly-formed "Green Team", a group of the MBRCLD programme participants has been established to pursue pro-environment activities in Dubai," he added.
According to Al Shared, the project will mobilise Dubai's publishing sector to adopt a comprehensive paper recycling programme, while delivering value-added benefits to all project participants.
Faisal bin Haider, leader of the Green Team, said, "The initiative is aimed at promoting eco-friendly behaviour among residents as well as converting the publishing process less energy intensive."
"It will be led by publishing companies in tandem with governmental organisations and waste management establishments. It could establish a model to be applied across the country and the wider region," he added.
Launching the initiative, the UAE Minister of Environment and Water Rashid Ahmad Bin Fahad urged the residents to be sensitive and responsive to the environmental issues and challenges of the society.
"The 'Green Paper' project is a step in the right direction to cultivate the private sector's support in various environmental programmes," he added.
Al Shared pointed out that the role of the publishing sector in protecting the environment is highlighted in the green project.
"It will also be part of a series of activities that ultimately seek to promote the long-term sustainable development of the emirate and support the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015, particularly its provisions that concern the environment," he noted.
Dubai Municipality will implement regulations to record both the volume of waste paper collected in the emirate and the percentage that is recycled.
